Like Stonehenge, Avebury is set in a broader prehistoric ceremonial landscape, with monuments dating from the 38th century BC to the late-Neolithic (around 2,500 BC), when the area’s inhabitants constructed Silbury Hill close to the source of the River Kennet. In addition, the surrounding ridges and hills are strewn chambered tombs and earth circles.
