Encompassing to the Thames and its catchment, central-south England developed more quickly than the rest of the country during the Iron Age, and its numerous ancient monuments are these days often buried under conurbation. But some striking examples survive, among them the totemic White Horse at Uffington - the greatest piece of prehistoric art in Britain.
