The coast of West Sussex was among the first areas of Britain to be colonized by Neolithic farmers from across the Channel, and the South Downs are studded with ancient remains, including some spectacular Bronze Age barrow cemeteries and later Iron Age hillforts. Among archeologists, however, the county’s standout site is an unremarkable looking gravel pit in Boxgrove near Chichester, where some of the earliest hominid remains ever discovered in Europe have been unearthed.
